The Federal Security Service (FSB) claimed responsibility for the assassination. Although Chechen rebel leaders originally denied Khattab’s death, they later admitted he died in Mar. 2002 and had kept the details of the event and his burial site secret. He appears to have been killed as part of an internal dispute over money, and the FSB is claiming to have engineered it. Khattab is said to have died within a few minutes of opening a letter addressed to him. Poisoning would prevent Khattab from being considered a shahid or martyr of the faith. This success will stimulate the hunt for other Chechen leaders.
